About Molality

Molality (m) is a measure of the concentration of a solute in a solution, expressed as the number of moles of solute per kilogram of solvent.

Formula:

Molality = Moles of Solute ÷ Mass of Solvent (in kg)

Where:

  • Moles of Solute = Mass of Solute ÷ Molecular Weight
  • Mass of Solvent = Mass of the solvent (not the total solution) in kilograms
  • Molality = Concentration in moles per kilogram (mol/kg)

Advantages over Molarity:

  • Independent of temperature (volume changes with temperature)
  • Independent of pressure
  • Useful for colligative properties calculations

Applications:

  • Boiling point elevation calculations
  • Freezing point depression calculations
  • Osmotic pressure calculations
  • Colligative properties studies
  • Chemical kinetics and thermodynamics
