About Colligative Properties

Colligative properties depend only on the number of solute particles, not on their identity. They include boiling point elevation, freezing point depression, osmotic pressure, and vapor pressure lowering.

Boiling Point Elevation:

ΔTb = i × Kb × m

Freezing Point Depression:

ΔTf = i × Kf × m

Osmotic Pressure:

π = i × M × R × T

Vapor Pressure Lowering:

ΔP = i × M × R × T / 760

Key Concepts:

  • Depend only on concentration, not solute identity
  • van't Hoff factor accounts for dissociation
  • Important in biological systems and industrial processes
  • Used in antifreeze, osmotic pressure measurements
