About Boiling Point Elevation

Boiling point elevation is a colligative property that occurs when a non-volatile solute is added to a solvent, raising its boiling point.

Formula:

ΔTb = Kb × m

Where:

  • ΔTb is the boiling point elevation in °C
  • Kb is the boiling point elevation constant in °C·kg/mol
  • m is the molality of the solution in mol/kg

Common Kb Values:

  • Water: 0.512 °C·kg/mol
  • Benzene: 2.53 °C·kg/mol
  • Ethanol: 1.22 °C·kg/mol
  • Acetic acid: 3.07 °C·kg/mol

Applications:

  • Antifreeze solutions
  • Food preservation
  • Industrial processes
  • Laboratory procedures
  • Chemical engineering
